Holiday Rentals in Vosges - A Guide to Vosges

The department of Vosges is in the French region of Lorraine which is situated in the east of France.  It takes its name from the nearby mountain range.

If driving to your holiday rentals in Vosges you can take advantage of the excellent network of French roads which run from the major ferry ports, including Calais, and your journey is likely to take you on the E15 through the Champagne area and Reims and then onto Vosges.

You may prefer to fly directly into Paris and take the train from there to your Vosges holiday rentals, or travel onward at your own pace by car, stopping to see the fabulous sights en route.  If you are considering this option, do check out our guide to car hire in Vosges before you book.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Vosges

Chalets to rent in Vosges are the most popular type of holiday rentals, in particular three bedroom properties.    One such property I found has 3 bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms, one of which has a Jacuzzi, a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, a TV, DVD, CD, wireless internet access, and a very nice garden and terrace.  It is located at the foot of the Alpine ski slopes, just two minutes from the town centre, and has an outstanding lake view.

Other Vosges chalets to rent I have seen include a south facing 3 bedroom property with 2 bathrooms and 2 separate toilets.  What is special about this chalet is that it has a hammam and a balneotherapy bath with chromotherapy, so you can really relax and enjoy the therapeutic effects of your surroundings.   The house is fully equipped and also has gym equipment to keep you really active!  It is also well equipped for babies and young children, making it a perfect family holiday home.

There are some really splendid holiday rentals in Vosges and the fresh air and scenery is sure to make your holiday a happy and health one.

Vosges Useful Information

Holiday rentals in Vosges are spread across 3 arrondissements, 31 cantons and 515 communes.  The Prefecture, or central governing point, of the department is based in Epinal.  Epinal itself is worth a visit.  It is situated on the Moselle river and the old town has medieval castle remains as well as a large forest with an arboretum.  Domremy-la-Pucelle which is the birthplace of Joan of Arc is also situated in Vosges.  It was formerly known only as Domremy but “la Pucelle” which means “Maid” was added after her nickname “The Maid of Orleans”.  The house in which she was born is still standing in the village.  You may also wish to the visit the Roman town of Grand which has a Roman amphitheatre and a temple for Apollo as well as a Roman aqueduct.

Whilst staying at your Vosges holiday rentals you may wish to try some of the local specialities including smoked meats such as bacon, sausages and hams.  Vosges Mountain Honey is the only honey in France which guarantees is tradition and quality and has its own AOC (appellation d’origine controlee, a French certification of origin).  Do try some of the Vosges jam which includes varieties such as dandelion flower and quince.  The area is also known for flavoured sweets including honey and blackcurrant, and for fine chocolate.  Its lush green meadows make for excellent cheese such as Brouere and Munster, whilst the mountains are well suited to growing red fruits.
