Holiday Rentals in Savoie - A Guide to Savoie

The departement of Savoie is situated in the east of the region of Rhone-Alpes in Southeastern France. It is best known for the excellent skiing and as such it is no surprise that 50% of its wealth is from tourism. The easiest way to get to your holiday rental in Savoie from the UK is via plane. A large number of airlines fly to the International airports of Geneva and Lyon. Or there are two local national airports - Grenoble or Chambéry.

If you would like to take in a bit of the French countryside on the way to your Savoie holiday rentals then why not take the train.

Take the Eurostar from London St. Pancras and change at Paris for Lyon. Or simply use the A6 or A39 motorways to head directly towards the French Alps. But if you are driving don’t forget to take a car that will be prepared for more extreme weather and geographical conditions. And note that high alpine passes can be closed between November and June.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Savoie

Given the location of your Savoie holiday rentals, it is unsurprising that nearly all properties to rent in the area are surrounding the ski resorts. Val-d’Isére, Méribel and Courchevel are all within the area and are extremely popular between the months of January – March. Most properties for rent are either apartments within the resorts or chalets nearby.

As skiing is often a group activity, there are a multitude of chalets to rent in Savoie that sleep upwards of 10 people. One particular chalet that stands out is a Val Thorens holiday chalet. It is at the high-end of chalets and luxuriously sleeps 6-10 persons with stunning views across the snow covered slopes and the ski resort below. Expect to pay a lot during the skiing season but split between you and your friends it won’t seem that bad!

If you would rather be next to the ski lifts and the après-ski then renting an apartment in Savoie is the right choice for you.

Savoie Useful Information

Savoie’s eastern two-thirds contains snow-capped mountains that are among the highest in Europe. Given its location, you can understand why Savoie, along with Albertvile, hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics.

But there is more to Savoie holiday rentals than skiing, including the warm water spas, such as Aix-les-Bains. The heart of this town is the 19th Century Thermes Nationaux, thermal baths which were enjoyed by the Romans over 2,000 years ago – in the basement the remains of the original baths can still be seen.

Holiday rentals in Savoie are spread amongst 3 arrondissements, 37 cantons and 305 communes. Savoie was originally part of the states of Savoy before France finally annexed it in 1860. Chambéry, once the capital of Savoy, is Savoie’s largest city. It has a very Italianate feel about it and boasts some of the areas main tourist sites such as the 15th Century Saint-Chapelle, which reputedly once housed the Holy Shroud.
