Holiday Rentals in Orne - A Guide to Orne
Your holiday rental in Orne is situated in the French region of Basse-Normandie (Lower Normandy). The Deprtement of Orne is the only one of Basse-Normandie’s 3 departements that doesn’t have a coastline, but it is still within easy reach of the sea.
If you don’t fancy a 4 hour drive from Calais, why not catch a ferry to Le Havre from Portsmouth? Your Orne holiday rental can be reached in an hour from there, by car.
Alternatively, the Eurostar to Paris, Taxi to Saint-Lazare station then the TGV high speed train to Caen will take around 5 hours 15 minutes, but I’d recommend you hire a car in Caen, which is just to the north of the Orne departement. The main Autoroute A28 runs through the departement, north to south, meaning wherever you choose your Orne property rental, you’ll easily be able to reach the large well-known cities of Le Mans to the south, and Rouen to the north. The other nearby large town is Caen, which is not on a direct Autoroute from Orne, but is none-the-less still close by. Also easily accessible, are other well-known places such as Bayeaux (of tapestry fame), Camembert and Pont l’Eveque (of cheese fame) and the beaches of Normandy.

There is a large choice of property for rent in Orne, though most are cottages and houses, which isn’t surprising, given that the departement is very rural, save for a couple of industrial towns, like Alencon, the capital. Most are decent sized properties with 2 to 5 bedrooms, and around a third of properties are in villages, the rest being in rural locations.
A great example of a cottage to rent in Orne, is one I found in a village called La Cochere, a little north of Alencon, close to the A28 Autoroute mentioned above. It is particularly suited to those looking for a peaceful relaxing holiday and has 2 bedrooms, a private outdoor swimming pool and it has been well renovated. At the other end of the scale, there’s a fabulous large house to rent in Les Champeaux, slightly further off the beaten track than the previously mentioned property, but still within easy access of the A28. The property is a converted barn with 4 bedrooms and can sleep 10 people, ideal for two families holidaying together. It is set in an acre of land and has a shared outdoor swimming pool, along with such luxuries as satellite TV. The price is also very reasonable if two families are sharing.

The Departement of Orne is one of three departements in the Region of Basse-Normandie. Orne has it’s Prefecture in Alencon (which is an industrial town, but very convenient if you need to rent a property near Le Mans for the 24 hour race, as I have done in the past). Orne is divided into 3 Arrondissements, 40 Cantons and 505 Communes. It is relatively sparsely populated, with a population way under half a million, in an area of 6103 square kilometres.
Your Orne property rental will position you well in the Normandy part of France, having good road access to Paris in the East and Rennes in the west, as well as easy access to the northern beaches. Don’t forget that a holiday rental in Orne could also be a good idea if you are looking to attend the Le Mans 24 hour race, as property near the circuit is booked up a year in advance.
