Holiday Rentals in Normandy - A Guide to Normandy

This historical region is situated on the north coast of France, south of the English Channel, making it an ideal location for holiday rentals in Normandy. It is just a short hop over the channel from Portsmouth to the ports of Le Havre or Cherbourg; or from Newhaven to Dieppe. Of course there is always the Channel Tunnel from the UK which will arrive at Calais, from there you will need to take the A16 and A28 into Normandy.

From international destinations ‘Charles de Gaulle’ Airport in Paris is the most convenient way to access your Normandy holiday rentals. From there you will probably end up on the A13 heading towards the regions capital, Rouen.

The region’s rich historical sights make it a perfect place for your Normandy holiday rentals. There is the 11th Century Bayeaux Tapestry, the magnificent monastery on Mont-St-Michel linked to the mainland by a causeway and more recently the shores on which the allied troops landed in World War II.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Normandy

The largest demand for property to rent in Normandy is for 2-3 bedroom houses and cottages. These are mainly situated in the countryside within smaller villages although given the quantity of coastline in Normandy, there are also a number of properties by the sea.

I found a stylish rustic family house in Manche near the beach in the pretty coastal village of Gouville-sur-mer. It has four bedrooms, sleeping 10 people with its own pool. Gouville has a market twice a week or if chic shopping is your thing then Granville is 40 minutes south. It is also the location of the Christian Dior Museum.

It seems that no matter what type of property to rent in Normandy you are looking for, there is something for everyone - and everywhere, whether it is rural, urban, by the sea or the river.

Normandy Useful Information

The French territory of Normandy is about 30,000 kilometres including sandy windswept beaches in the north and west, and lush pastoral land. Its main industries are agriculture, tourism and of course its production of cider and Calvados (apple brandy). The Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey although British crown dependencies, are still considered to be culturally and historically part of Normandy.

Normandy is broken into five ‘departements’ – Eure, Seine-Maritime, Manche, Calvados and Orne with an estimated 3 million of inhabitants.  The main towns within the region are Rouen, Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg and all of these provide a good selection of Normandy holiday rentals to choose from.

It is stepped in history which makes holiday rentals in Normandy a joy. It is a piece of land fought over for centuries by the French and English – making it an area of historical interest to both parties. The Norman conquest of England is famously represented on the Bayeaux Tapestry; there are beautiful half-timbered houses in the streets of Rouen, a city famous for the Martyrdom of Joan of Arc; and for the artistic amongst you there is Monet’s gardens in Giverny. There is so much of interest when you are staying in your Normandy holiday rentals.
