Having said that, whilst researching, I did find a lovely apartment to rent in Stenay, around 40 kilometres to the north of Verdun, close to the Belgian border. The apartment is situated in an 18th century watermill, to the northern edge of the battlegrounds of Verdun, Morthommes and Argonne from the First World War. It has one bedroom, is well equipped and is reasonably priced.
Alternatively, if there are several people in your party, why not rent a castle in Naix aux Forges. It’s a small village to the south of Verdun, and the castle has 11 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and can sleep up to 18 people. It’s a magnificent property in the middle of a 70,000 m2 park, 5 kilometres from the town centre and is in superb condition, and is a great pace to get away from it all.
