Holiday Rentals in Mayenne - A Guide to Mayenne
Pays de la Loire is a region in the north west of France. Your holiday rental in Mayenne will be situated in the north of the Region, around half way between the well known cities of Rennes and Le Mans.
Given it’s relative proximity to the United Kingdom, I’d recommend driving to your Mayenne holiday rental, which, if you take a ferry to Le Havre, will only be around 2 hours drive through northern France, more like 4-5 hours from Calais. Take the E402 (A16 followed by A28)from Calais to Rouen and on to Le Mans, at which point you’ll travel directly west to your Mayenne property rental. If you are driving from Le Havre, a much more scenic drive would be via Caen and then directly south through the countyside. It’ll take a little longer, but will be much more rewarding.
Alternatively, you could fly to one of the region’s local airports, Rennes being reachable from several UK airports directly using Flybe. You’ll of course need to hire a car once you get there, since this Department is very rural and the public transport unlikely to give you the freedom you’ll require to get you to and from your property rental in Mayenne.
Types of Holiday Rentals in Mayenne
Given the lack of any major towns in the Departement, your Mayenne property rental is going to be based in the countryside or in one of the many villages in the area. The majority of properties are cottages to rent in Mayenne, though there are a few houses to rent in Mayenne and villas to rent in Mayenne available.
I found a lovely cottage to rent in Chateau-Gontier, half way between Laval and Angers on the N162, in the south of the Departement. It has 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, sleeps 4 people and has direct access to the Mayenne River, with use of a boat. It’s a great place to relax or make use of the local amenities, such as horse riding, swimming, tennis, fishing and water skiing, to name a few.
If you fancy something more up-market, there’s a beautiful 18th century 5 bedroomed farmhouse to rent in Fromentieres, to the south east of Laval. It’s a large property with very generous room sizes and an indoor swimming pool. It also has plenty of outdoor space, a gazebo, swings and great views.
Mayenne Useful Information
The Departement of Mayenne is divided into 3 Arrondissements, 32 Cantons and 261 Communes (the towns and villages). It’s capital (prefecture) is Laval, which is the only town of any size in the Departement. Laval has an 11th century chateau, which was home to Barons and Counts until 1794.
There are only around 300,000 inhabitants in a land area of 5175 square kilometers, so your holiday rental in Mayenne will be well away from any densely populated areas. The Departement has forests and hills in the north, and rolling countryside in the south.
I’d advise looking for a Mayenne holiday rental near to Laval if you are more comfortable around lots of people, especially since Laval is on the E50 road which runs from Rennes in the west to Le Mans in the east, both cities being sizeable.
