There are sub prefectures at Figeac (another medieval town) and Gourdon, which is famous for its prehistoric sites. If ancient history is of interest, you will enjoy the prehistoric caves, Grotte de Pech-Merle, near Cabrerets, which date back 25,000 years and have a range of carvings and paintings.
Gouffre de Padirac is a huge crater formed when a cave collapsed, and it is known as the Devil’s Doorway. You can take a lift or walk down 103 metres to an underground river, from where you explore the huge caves.
In terms of population, the departement is ranked 90th out of 100 departements and is very sparsely populated and unspoilt. There are 3 rivers flowing through Lot: the Dordogne; the Cele and the Lot. The Lot offers boat trips from which you can explore the villages and vineyards along the way, whilst the Dordogne and the Cele are popular for water sports including canoeing and kayaking.
