Holiday Rentals in Loire Valley - A Guide to Loire Valley

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Loire Valley, you’re probably already aware that the area is crammed full of chateaux. In fact, there are more than 300 of them, dating right back to the 10th century.

The name "Loire Valley" is not strictly correct as the name of this region of France but it well known by this name so that is why we are calling it the "Loire Valley".

The correct name for this region is "Centre" as it sits pretty much in the middle of France around the river Loire, running from the Atlantic Ocean to the west, passing through Nantes, Angers, Tours, and Orleans in the east. It is situated to the south west of Paris and to the north of Bordeaux and the region of Poitou-Charentes.

The whole area is easily reachable by the A10 road from Paris or the A28 from the historic motor racing town of Le Mans, and is only around a 5 hour drive from the French side of the channel tunnel.

There are airports in Nantes and Angers, both being served by major and low cost airlines, so you’ll easily be able to reach your Loire Valley holiday rentals with a minimum of fuss.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Loire Valley

There is a wide variety of property to rent in Loire Valley, but the region offers mostly chateaux, houses and cottages. These properties offer a good choice  of accommodation, suitable for any number up to 10 people, usually with more than one bathroom.

Most of the Loire Valley holiday rentals are in rural locations, or in villages, since there are very few large towns in the region. An awful lot of the properties are very old and full of character, but many come with modern amenities such as swimming pools.

It’s advisable to either drive to your holiday rental in Loire Valley, or hire a car from one of the airports, since you’ll probably be staying in a relatively small village and the plentiful sights are very spread out.

Loire Valley Useful Information

The region of Pays de la Loire that Loire Valley is mainly situated within, is made up of 5 Departements, these being Loire-Atlantique, Mayenne, Maine-et-Loire, Sarthe and Vendee. These Departements are sub-divided into 17 Arrondissements, 192 Cantons, then into 1503 Communes.

The region is fairly large, at approximately 32000 square kilometers and has a population of around 3.5 million people.

The capital city of the region is Nantes, situated 50 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean and is a city full of history, operating as a centre for shipping trade in times past, due to it’s accessibility to the Atlantic Ocean and local convergance of the Erdre and Sevre Nantaise rivers (as well as the Loire itself). You will, of course, be able to find a holiday apartment to rent in Nantes if you desire, since it’s a fairly large town.

The rest of the Loire Valley is famous for it’s wine, being the third largest wine region in France and has become the third most popular destination for tourists in France, so it’s advisable to book your holiday rental in Loire Valley in plenty of time to avoid disappointment.

As mentioned briefly above, there are a huge number of chateaux to rent in Loire Valley, particularly around the towns of Tours and Blois. So why not have a look for a castle to rent in Tours, hire a car and spend a week or two driving around the Loire Valley on a history seeking tour.
