Holiday Rentals in Haute-Alpes - A Guide to Haute-Alpes

If you are looking for holiday rentals in Haute-Alpes, you are probably into your outdoor activities, since this French Department is situated (as you could guess from it’s name) in the Alps mountain range.

Italy borders it’s eastern edge, while the French departments of Savoie, Isere, Drome and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence surround the rest of Haute-Alpes.

There are few major towns in the Department, these being Embrun, Briancon and Gap and the main route in by road is the A51 then N85 from Grenoble, which has a decent sized international airport to get you nearby and is only 120 kilometres away. You can, of course, rent a car from the airport to get you to your Hautes-Alpes holiday rentals, equipped with snow tyres etc should you require them.

The department is home to Lac-de-Serre-Poncon, which is one of the largest man-made lakes in Western Europe at 28 square kilometres. Built and dammed to prevent flooding in part of the area, the lake is not only beautiful, but houses sixteen hydroelectric plants and provides considerable local irrigation.

If you fancy holiday rentals in Queyras Valley, on the eastern side of the department, it is worth noting that it is widely regarded as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Haute-Alpes

Most of the Hautes-Alpes holiday rentals are apartments and a large proportion of these are ski based properties, centred mainly around the ski resorts themselves. Most sleep 2 to 4 people, but it is of course possible to find a chalet rental in Haute-Alpes if you require 3 or 4 bedrooms or space for up to 10 people.

The Briancon and Ecrins areas house most of the property for rent in Hautes-Alpes, but I noticed recently a Villa for rent in Gap which had 5 bedrooms capable of sleeping 12 people, and it had a lovely private heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi. So, whether you are looking for a ski rental property in Haute-Alpes or a more relaxed larger  property, you’ll not be disappointed.

Haute-Alpes Useful Information

The department of Hautes-Alpes is in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur and is divided into 2 Arrondissements, 30 Cantons and subdivided finally into 177 Communes (which are essentially the actual villages).

Hautes-Alpes is one of the most sparsely populated departments of France, being ranked 98th out of 100. The population is only a little over 120000 in an area of 5549 km2.

However, in the winter months, the area is subjected to an influx of winter sports fans, particularly skiers and snowboarders, so if you are looking to book a holiday rental in Hautes-Alpes from December to March, make sure you book ahead. Ski property rentals in Briancon and Ecrins are plentiful, but bear in mind if you are looking for a more unusual property such as a large villa or a house for rent in Ecrins, they are much rarer.

It’s worth noting that the Hautes-Alpes department is famous for it’s summer sports too. The Tour de France regularly passes through Briancon and the area has some wonderful rock-climbing and hiking locations.
