Holiday Rentals in Franche-Comte - A Guide to Franche-Comte
If you are looking for holiday rentals in Franche-Comte, you’ll no doubt be aware of it’s proximity to Switzerland on the region’s eastern side, with Geneva to the south, and Dijon which is just outside the western boundary of the region.
It is easy to access the region by plane, since both Geneva and Dijon have decent sized airports, being serviced by plenty of airlines from all over Europe. Alternatively, should you wish to drive to your Franche-Comte holiday rentals, the region’s capital, Besancon can be reached from Paris on the A5 with a few smaller roads, or A6 / A36 via Dijon. The TGV has superb direct links with Lille and Paris to Besancon, offering an alternative to road or air travel.
Franche-Comte holiday rentals are available all over the region, which is mostly in the Jura mountains. These are not Alpine in size, but are none-the-less worthy of note, since apart from the obvious hilly nature of the area, the mountains bring with them a high precipitation and plenty of forest land.
The Jura mountains were where palaeontologists first discovered rocks from the pre-historic period 200 to 146 million years ago, later called the Jurassic Period.
Types of Holiday Rentals in Franche-Comte
The majority of property for rent in Franche-Comte is found in these same mountains and these are mainly one and two bedroom chalets or houses. They are often based around golfing or skiing, two of the main sports found in the area for tourists.
If these activities aren’t your thing, or you would like to find an apartment to rent in Franche-Comte, why not try holiday rentals in Besancon? The town is home to some ancient Roman ruins, including and amphitheatre and an aquaduct and incidentally, is the birthplace of Victor Hugo, the writer. It also has one of the best art galleries outside of Paris.
Whilst writing, I couldn’t help but notice a lovely house for rent in Jura. Built in the mid 19th century, the house has 7 bedrooms and sleeps up to 15 people, and whilst seemly quite expensive, offers superb value for money if fully occupied. Perfect for a group of friends on a sporting holiday, particularly skiing in the winter months.
Franche-Comte Useful Information
The region of Franche-Comte is made up of 4 Departements, these being Doubs, Haute-Saone, Jura and Territoire de Belfort. These Departements are sub-divided into 8 Arrondissements, 116 Cantons, then into 1786 Communes.
The region is relatively small, at approximately 16000 square kilometres and has a population of around 1.2 million people, but there are still plenty of holiday rentals in Franche-Comte to choose from.
The major cities are Besancon the capital, Montbeliard, Belfort and Dole. The Doubs river, which begins in the Jura mountains, meanders it’s way violently down to the river Saone and provides plenty of entertainment for those who seek thrills in canoes
If you prefer more relaxed holiday rentals in Franche-Comte, why not try renting a property in Arbois, which is also worthy of note as it’s the wine capital of the Jura area and produces wines similar to that of Burgundy, partly due to the region’s relatively cool climate.
