Holiday Rentals in Drome - A Guide to Drome

The department of Drôme is in the Region of Rhône-Alpes, in the south east of France, and is named after the Drôme river.

Holiday rentals in Drôme are highly accessible from the UK since the E15 Euro route which runs from Scotland to Spain passes through the department.

From hilltop villages to lavender fields and olive groves, the area is mountainous and boasts the most stunning scenery.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Drome

Holiday rentals in Drome are popular largely because of this stunning scenery.  Houses to rent in Drome are the most popular type of accommodation and I found a wonderful 3 bedroom house to rent in Venterol, a pretty, protected hillside wine village.

The house belongs to an artist, and whilst it has been renovated, it retains rustic charm with tiled floors and oak beamed ceilings.  The property sleeps 5-6 people and has a view of vineyards and apricot orchards.

If you are looking for a larger property, I also found a rather striking Drome holiday rental in Montelimar with 6 bedrooms, sleeping up to 12 people.  The property also has 5 bathrooms, air conditioning, all modern appliances and even boasts a concierge!  Outside there is a garden with terrace and barbeque and a private pool.

I couldn’t help thinking what a marvellous location for a relaxing family getaway, and with all that room, you could invite some friends along to share the cost and the cooking!  Whatever size of property you are looking for, there are plenty of Holiday rentals in Drome, and a wealth of locations from which to select.

Drome Useful Information

Holiday rentals in Drome are spread amongst 3 arrondisements, 36 cantons and 369 communes.  The prefecture, or central governing point, of Drome is situated in the town of Valence, which is located on the Rhone river.  At the time of writing this article, Drome ranked 53rd out of 100 departements in France in terms of population.  It covers a land area of approx 6,500 square kilometres.

Once you have selected your holiday rental in Drome, you will perhaps want to be planning how to spend your time.  You may wish to visit the Vercors National Park, a breathtaking 180,000 hectare park with cliffs, caves, gorges and forests.  Or perhaps a visit to Crest which boasts the highest keep in France at over 50 metres.  Take a tour of the beautiful villages including Bordeaux with its castle ruins and quaint paved streets.  If you prefer a more active holiday, then the river Drome holiday rentals offer many water sports including canoeing, rafting, kayaking, windsurfing and rowing.

The departement is known for its natural silk which is woven in many of the small towns of Drome, as well as the smooth nougat of Montelimar, olives, truffles, lavender, cheese and of course wine.  Shoe-lovers will want to visit Romans-sur-Isere – famous for its shoe industry and housing many shoe designers and factory outlets as well as the International Shoe Museum.
