Holiday Rentals in Charente - A Guide to Charente

If you’re looking for a Charente holiday rental, you will probably be aware that  the Departement of Charente is situated in the Poitou-Charentes region of France, midway down the country, adjacent to the bay of Biscay.

The Departement can be reached by flying to either La Rochelle to the North West, or Bordeaux to the South West. Both airports are served by several low-cost airlines from the United Kingdom. As an alternative, it’s just recently been made possible to fly directly from London Stansted to Angouleme-Cognac Airport in just an hour and a half. Which ever airport you choose, I’d suggest you hire a car to get around the Departement, as it’s essentially a rural area.

To reach your holiday rental in Charente by car, you’ll need to drive down the E402 (A28) from Abbeville ( a little south of Calais) to Le Mans, and on to Tours, which is just to the north of the Poitou-Charentes Region.

Charente itself is situated in the south of the Region, with it’s capital city of Angouleme right in the middle. Off to the far west of the Departement, but only a short drive away, is the town of Cognac. To state the obvious, you’ll find the most famous of all varieties of Brandy produced here. If you like your Cognac to drink, perhaps a holiday rental in Cognac itself would be a great place to explore this well known wine producing area of France.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Charente

The majority of properties for rent in Charente are cottages to rent in Charente, but there is a great choice of houses to rent in Charente too. There are also some enormous chateaux to rent in Charente, but I was particularly drawn to a couple of relatively small properties.

There’s a lovely barn to rent in Manot, a small village to the north east of Angouleme. It has 4 bedrooms and can sleep ten people. It has stone walls and exposed oak beams, and outside, a 10m swimming pool. It also benefits from being adjacent to the River Vienne, ideal if you’d like to take a boat down the river to the local village.

I found a delightful cottage to rent in Cognac (or more accurately, surrounded by vineyards, around 10 minutes from Cognac). It shares a site (and swimming pool) with four other properties, with private gates. The cottage sleeps 4 people in 2 bedrooms, and is superbly decorated and maintained and most importantly, is very reasonably priced.

Charente Useful Information

The Departement of Charente is in the Poitou-Charentes Region of France. The Departement is divided up into 3 Arrondissements, 35 Cantons and 404 Communes (the towns and villages). It’s a sparsely populated Departement, with fewer than 400,000 inhabitants in an area of 5956 square kilometres.

Your holiday rental in Charente will most likely be in a rural location, ideal for a relaxing, slow-paced trip, touring around this famous wine area of France. The average temperatures for the Departement are similar to that of London, as is the spread of precipitation. Somehow though, I think you’ll get a great deal more sunshine in your Charente holiday rental than you will in the United Kingdom.
