Holiday Rentals in Basse-Normandie - A Guide to Basse-Normandie
The region of Basse-Normandie (meaning lower Normandy) is located in the north of France.
If you are planning to drive to your holiday rental in Basse-Normandie, you will pleased to know that it is home to the ferry ports of Caen and Cherbourg and is also close to St Malo, Dieppe, Boulogne and Calais, meaning it can easily be reached by car.
It is accessible by air from the north of England and Scotland, and by a regular train service from Paris in just over two hours.
Types of Holiday Rentals in Basse-Normandie
Houses to rent in Basse-Normandie are the most popular type of holiday rental and 3 bedroom houses seem to be the most common size.
There really is an enormous amount of choice, both in terms of location and style of property. I came across a very nice house to rent in Calvados which is a cottage style property with 3 bedrooms. The house is very tastefully decorated and furnished and has all the appliances and conveniences you need. It is surrounded by apple trees and has the most stunning views over the adjacent valley.
If you fancy a touch more luxury, I have seen an elegant country house to rent in Basse-Normandie with 5 bedrooms and a heated swimming pool. This Manche holiday rental sleeps up to 12 people and has 5 bathrooms, so it would be ideal for two or three families. It is well equipped with appliances and facilities and even has a baby grand piano so you can entertain your fellow guests!
Of course these are just two examples of Basse-Normandie houses to rent and there are many, many more to choose from.
Basse-Normandie Useful Information
Holiday rentals in Basse-Normandie are split across the three “Departements” of the region – namely Orne, Calvados and Manche. The capital of the region is Caen, and other major towns include Lisieux, Flers and Alencon.
The excellent road network of the region means that it is easy to get around and explore the area, and there are several places worth seeing. Mont St Michel, the Benedictine Abbey and world heritage site, and a fantastic example of medieval architecture, is at the western most point of the region and I really recommend you take the time to visit.
Other notable places to visit whilst staying in your Basse-Normandie holiday rental include the historic and moving museums at the D Day beaches of Calvados, and the tapestry at Bayeux which depicts the 1066 invasion of England by William the Conqueror, who was the Duke of Normandy. Basse-Normandie is also well known for the famous authors de Maupassant, Proust and Flaubert who lived here.
Whilst staying in your Basse-Normandie holiday rental, you will surely like to try some of the local specialities including Camembert, Livarot and Pont L’Eveque cheese, washed down with a glass of Calvados. You may also wish to try the local pork speciality from Vire known as “Andouille de Vire” which is salted pork sausage or the fabulous toffees from Isigny.
