Holiday Rentals in Aveyron - A Guide to Aveyron

The department of Aveyron is located in southern France and is named after the Aveyron River, which runs west through the region. Holiday rentals in Aveyron can be reached by travelling along the E09 motorway which runs down southern France to Toulouse, or the E11 motorway which again runs down southern France but to Montpellier.

The closest airport to the area is Rodez Airport which is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away. The airport is fairly small in size and at the time of writing flights are available from the UK and depart from London Stanstead with Ryanair.

Aveyron holiday rentals are situated in one of the largest departments of France. However, the area is perhaps one of the least known and most sparsely populated areas. Local residents are known to have said “there are more cows here than tourists”.

This seems strange to me as there is an abundance of beautiful natural scenery, with mountain peaks, waterfalls, deep valleys and peaceful lakeside resorts. Coupled together with thousands of castles, megalithic tombs, Gallo-roman ruins and superb Romanesque architecture properties to rent in Aveyron seem an ideal choice for an interesting and exciting holiday to France.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Aveyron

The majority of Aveyron holiday rentals are 2-3 bedroom cottages and farmhouses situated in rural hamlets and villages.

A typical 2 bedroom house based in the medieval village of Najac for instance, has two contemporary bedrooms, large open plan kitchen/dining area which then leads on to a simple but comfortable sitting room area. It has an open terrace/seating area which is perched high up with superb views over the hills and countryside. Looking at some of the reviews for the cottage you will definitely need a car to travel round so why not check out our car hire page.

There is a huge variety of differing properties to rent in Aveyron, from the typical cottage mentioned above, to stone houses, apartments, gites, old renovated houses and villas with swimming pools. Having researched quite a few areas of France this is certainly one of my favourite places to visit, giving an interesting and varied insight into the hidden side of France.

Aveyron Useful Information

The Aveyron department is located in the larger region of Midi-Pyrénées with its capital of Rodez. The area is broken down into 3 ‘Arrondissements’, 46 ‘Cantons’ and 304 ‘Communes’. As mentioned previously it is one of the larger departments with a land area of around 8735 square km but with a relatively small population of around 264,000.

Aveyron holiday rentals are ideally located to visit this hidden part of France with such tourist attractions as the Cévennes National Park, the Castle of Najac, Conques Abbey and the town  of Millau. The town  itself is the site of the world’s tallest vehicular bridge, the Millau viaduct. Designed by the British architect Sir Norman Foster it is even taller than the most famous French landmark the Eiffel Tower.

Apart from the historic attractions and superb scenery, other activities include fishing, horse riding, hiking and camping and plenty of local handmade crafts and produce including the famous Roquefort cheese. Holiday rentals in Aveyron are sure to provide long lasting memories for years to come.
