Holiday Rentals in Auvergne - A Guide to Auvergne

The region of Auvergne is located in the centre of France, at the heart of the Massif-Central.  If you are driving to your holiday rentals in Auvergne you can use the excellent network of Euro routes to reach your destination in as little as seven hours from Calais.

The nearest airports offering flights from the UK with low cost airlines are Lyon which is about two hours drive, and Limoges which is about two and a half hours drive. If you get a good enough deal on car hire then Auvergne holiday rentals can make an interesting short break option.

If you are wondering what the weather would be like if you chose holiday rentals in Auvergne, well, the climate in the summer months of July and August is warm and sunny, averaging around 25C.

In the mountains there may be occasional thunderstorms after a period of hot weather.  There may also be morning mists which quickly burn off in the sun to reveal a warm and sunny day.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Auvergne

Whilst researching this website, I found some amazing Châteaux to rent in Auvergne, some sleeping up to 20 guests, which would make for a fabulous holiday.

For a smaller party, I found a breathtaking château to rent in Haute-Loire with an independent wing which would be a rather grand Haute-Loire holiday rental, with 4 bedrooms sleeping up to 8 people.  It has a private terrace and swimming pool and spectacular views over the Periogordian hills.

There is a huge living room with a grand fireplace and a well equipped kitchen.  The property boasts the most amazing antiques and furnishings which provide a romantic medieval feel.

If you are looking for something on a smaller scale, how about a 2 bedroom quaint cottage in an area of outstanding beauty.  I’ve seen a  well equipped holiday cottage rental in Allier with a swimming pool and garden. It has impressive views of the Puy-de-Dôme volcano, although thankfully there have been no volcanic eruptions in France for 6,000 years!

Auvergne Useful Information

The capital city of Auvergne is Clermont-Ferrand, which is one of the oldest cities in France.  The region is split into 4 “Départements”: Puy-de-Dôme, Allier, Cantal and Haute-Loire.  It is then split into 14 Arrondissements, 158 Cantons and 1,310 Communes.

Auvergne is a region with dramatic countryside and rugged mountainous scenery and holiday rentals in Auvergne are certainly on my list of favourites.  It boasts some of the country’s most beautiful Romanesque churches and Renaissance palaces.

You will find wide volcanoes, vast lakes, forests and rivers, all full of wonderful and unique flora and fauna.  Of course, in an area that boasts such dramatic landscapes, outdoor sports are countless, and there is bound to be something to suit the whole family when choosing holiday rentals in Auvergne.

Auvergne is also known for its spas.  Why not consider holiday rentals in Vichy, where volcanic activity has produced thermal spas, famous for their cures since Roman times.

Wherever your Auvergne holiday rental, why not sample some of the local foods.  Le Puy is famous for its green lentils, which are perfectly complemented by the region’s famous salted hams and sausages.  Don’t forget to try one of the regions five famous Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) cheeses - Saint-Nectaire, Cantal, Salers, Fourme d’Ambert and Bleu d’Auvergne.    Regional wines include Madargues, Boudes, Saint-Pourçain and Châteaugay.
