Holiday Rentals in Alsace - A Guide to Alsace

Alsace is one of the smallest regions of France, located on the eastern border next to Germany and Switzerland.

If you are driving through France to get to your holiday rental in Alsace, you will undoubtedly use one of the Euro routes which pass through the region.  As well as being easily accessible by road, Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg international airport in Alsace is served by the popular low cost airlines from the UK, including Easyjet and Ryanair, as well as British Airways.

Strasbourg, the capital city of Alsace, is accessible on the TGV Est rail network, and the high speed link means you can reach your holiday rental in Alsace from Paris in just over two hours.

The region has a semi continental climate and boasts hot summers with very little rainfall, making it an ideal location for your holiday rental in France.

If it’s a ski holiday you are looking for, holiday rentals in Alsace are well worth considering.  Alsace has the stunning Vosges mountains with 22 miles of downhill pistes, over 600 miles of cross-country tracks and 170 ski lifts.  You will find the slopes uncrowded and perfect for all levels of skiers.

Types of Holiday Rentals in Alsace

The most popular types of property to rent in Alsace seem to be two bedroom apartments and houses in a rural location, sleeping up to 4 people, although there is a wide range of holiday rentals in Alsace.

I just came across a very nice holiday chalet to rent in St Amarin.  It’s a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom property, sleeping up to 8 adults.  It has a wealth of facilities, including a spa and sauna, and offers the most amazing views across the St Amarin valley.

This holiday rental in Alsace would be ideal for a family summer break or indeed a ski holiday.  If you prefer to stay in a town, then I also came across a two bedroom apartment in Colmar, a picturesque 16th century timber framed house in the pedestrianised area of this pretty 9th century town.

Due to the regional microclimates, Colmar is the driest town in France.  If you fancy a pre-Christmas shopping exhibition, the famous Christmas market and snow covered buildings of Strasbourg, make Christmas holiday rentals in Strasbourg an appealing seasonal opportunity.  There are a huge variety of apartments to rent in Strasbourg, and the cobbled streets, fine restaurants and stunning architecture are sure to please.

Alsace Useful Information

The region of Alsace covers just 8,000 kilometres making it the fourth smallest region of France.  It is split into two “Départements”: Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin, which are then split into 13 Arrondissements, 75 Cantons and 904 Communes.  It has very strong Germanic influences due to its location, and the fact that it has passed between French and German control many times.

Culinary specialities of Alsace include pork, Sauerkraut and Tartes aux Quetsches – a local plum tart.  The region is also well known for its Alsatian wines which are mostly white.  Alsace has many Germanic influences – in the architecture, the food, the wine and the dialect, making it unique and meaning that a holiday rental in Alsace really does offer something different and interesting.
