Holiday Rentals in Allier - A Guide to Allier
Your Allier holiday rentals will be situated in the Auvergne region, right in the middle of France. Whilst there is an airport in nearby Clermont-Ferrand, it’s not served by direct flights. Instead, it’s necessary to change planes in Paris.
If thinking of flying to your holiday rentals in Allier, I’d suggest looking at airports such as Lyon or Limoges, both around two hours drive away or so. Of course, when you get there, you’ll need to hire a car to get to your Alliers holiday rental. Read our car hire guide page to see how to get the best deals on car hire in France.
It is quite possible to reach the departement within a day if you are driving. Just drive south to Paris, around the Peripherique, down the A6 and finally A77 Autoroute. Of course you’ll have to time your journey so as to miss Paris at rush hour or lunch time if possible, since the Peripherique (ring road) can be ever so busy at peak times.
The journey from Calais to your property rental in Allier should take around 5 to 6 hours, and this way, you’ll have your own car with you to enable you to travel around freely in this very rural area of France.
Types of Holiday Rentals in Allier
Given that the departement is very rural and sparsely populated, there are not a great deal of properties to rent in Alliers, but of those that are available, most seem to be cottages to rent in Alliers or houses to rent in Alliers, with the odd apartment or enormous chateau to rent in Alliers if you so desire.
There’s a lovely spacious detached house to rent in Vichy (or to be precise, in a village nearby called Langy, around 20km from Vichy). It’s in a quiet village, away from busy towns, but near enough to reach Vichy (one of the departement’s sub-prefectures) with ease. 4 bedrooms make the property versatile for a large family and whilst décor is simple, it is also clean and appealing, and the rental price is really really reasonable.
Alternatively, there’s a magnificent chateau to rent near Montlucon (another one of the departement’s sub-prefectures), in a place called Marcillat en Combraille. It’s possible to rent one bedroom or all ten, making a great retreat for a large family gathering or celebration. There’s a lovely large outdoor pool to make use of all the summer sunshine, and absolutely exquisite décor throughout the property. Prices are very reasonable considering the wonderful property.

If you are thinking of holiday rentals in Allier, you’ll be interested to know that the Parc des Volcans (Volcano Regional Park) is only an hour's drive away, and is a fascinating area consisting of three groups of extinct volcanoes. If you fancy some excitement, Vulcania, the Volcano based theme park is 15k from Clermont Ferrand, and The Magny Cours Formula One racing circuit is only around an hour’s drive away.
